As everything I do is to encourage people to adopt or support shelter animals, there really couldn’t have been a better reblog option than this. You must, must, must see it! You truly will be amazed
With thanks to Martin Lack for forwarding this item.
As reported on the BBC,
5 December 2012A charity in New Zealand is teaching rescued dogs how to drive a car.
The canine driving school is aimed at proving how intelligent the animals can be.
Monty the giant schnauzer is among the novice drivers who have learned to control the brakes, gears and steering wheel.
Bill Hayton reports.
Prepare to be amazed!
Just watched the video and I am amazed! No back seat drivers when Fido is in the car! Look Out!
Would be quite handy if you want to go out for a few drinks. Great designated driver 🙂
That is amazing..My Mom tild me about it as she saw it on the news 🙂 Mollie can learn, so she can run all the errands xx00xx
Mollie and Alfie
I was thinking more along the lines of designated driver after popping out for a few drinks 🙂
yeah, that sounds like a plan 🙂 Come read my little poem. I am sending you something after xmas, the post is too manic at the moment..Yes it’s a sugar Daddy LOL xx00xx
Mollie and Alfie
Truthfully we think it is a very clever hoax but good on them it will get them alot of publicty. Have a super Saturday.
Best wishes Molly
Publicity is the main aim, so well done to them. I don’t believe it is a hoax but I certainly wouldn’t trust them to drive without the close supervision they are being given.
I thought it was real..lol
Hey Lady Litchi, Hey Sabre, Hey Boks, Jet here. Hi Miss Susan.
OMD, that’s incredible! Mom asked me to share that Mr. Fred ground down the manual transmission in one of Mom’s cars in just a little longer than the same time period these K9s learn to drive a manual transmission! BOL!
Oh we know that this demonstration will solidify (VBP) the K9 intelligence for those that haven’t figured it out yet.
Oh dear, the dogs are doing better than Mr Fred – this is not a good thing 🙂
I watched the film on the tv here and have decided that I want to drive too, so I can take myself to the park 🙂
Now what a fabulous idea that is. Get to go to the park whenever you want. Best your mom hide the car keys now 🙂
I saw that video on the local news. Awesome. Considering it took me 3 months to teach Cupcake to just RIDE in the car, I doubt she’d have been a candidate. Lucky her rescue/adoption was not contingent on her intelligence!! I love her just the way she is…
Absolutely (we don’t really need any more dogs driving cars anyway 🙂 ). We did not get this on the news – well, not that I was aware of anyway, so it was new to me. Seems like this one has already gone viral though. Doesn’t surprise me in the least.
Moggies will be driving next 🙂
Can just see the headline titles “Your Moggie Designated Driver awaits you” 😀
Oh, I saw that on TV yesterday! Ma laughed and laughed at the Irish Wolfhound-ish doggie! He sits in the drivers seat like Ma’s Sheepdog did ~ cracked her up! Good things Puddles didn’t see it ~ they seem to be drivin’ better than hers! BOL
Kisses,
Ruby
😀 It’s really sad for us humans, when we realise the dogs are doing better at this than most of us. I really don’t think you should tell Puddles that, though 🙂
I have a personal trainer/bodyguard. Now I need a chauffeur – it is so hard keeping up 😦
I know Princess Zena, I know. Fame and Royalty comes with quite a high price to pay 🙂
And some people say dogs aren’t smart. A very impressive twist on dog training!
They are as smart as the time and energy you have to put into them. They are incredibly intelligent but we tend to get lazy, or caught up with all the rest of life and don’t give them the opportunity to show it. This training took ages, with many small steps being learnt and then combined. I do take my hat off to the patience and dedication shown in doing so.
That was an awesome video! Love it! I thought I’ve seen it all. But wait, I wonder if someone ever trained a dog to fly an airplane (yikes!)…
Yikes indeed! One thing to train a dog to drive a car that you are walking next to, giving commands constantly but we’d have to be supermen/women to fly next to a plane doing the same 😀
I saw this, it’s incredible!
It seems like a lot of people overseas have seen this but not here in South Africa. Still, seemed like I had to share it for those who hadn’t.
I saw that story, that is really amazing. I know dogs are really smart but that’s great multi tasking:)
It seems like a lot of my overseas readers have already seen this but not here in South Africa. No matter what, it was just too great not to share.
Holy cow?! A driving dog, and it’s real!
Just wait till the cats get wind of this! They’ll be wanting to show they can do a far better job. Sabre, my one cat, is actually far easier to train than my dog and would certainly want to show off that talent!
I wonder how she’s going to steer and reach for the pedals!
It’ll probably be a two cat exercise and I’m sure they’d get it right, given half a chance 🙂
We have to try this out!
So cool, it just goes to show what intelligence these wonderful animals have. Just adorable 🙂
So glad you enjoyed it. With an awful lot of time and patience, is truly is amazing what you can teach a dog (or cat, for that matter, as my one cat is far easier to train than my dog?!)
How much we can and should learn from animals….starting with unconditional love! hugs, pat
Yes indeed! If only people could learn to love like animals do.
Hey, I saw this on the news. It’s REAL!! Really too amazing. Love the video.
Amazing how many people overseas have seen it but not here in South Africa. It really was amazing and I just had to share for those who hadn’t seen it yet.
Right, this is a clear indication that we need to get rid of all our minibus taxi drivers and replace them with shelter dogs. The latter will do a FAR better job. Trouble is that if the existing taxi drivers go into shelters, who is going to adopt them?
Oh dear, you are sooooo funny 😀 I’m crying I’m laughing so much this side. I love the idea of replacing the taxi drivers with shelter dogs but do fear you are right – we would have a hard time placing the drivers in “forever” homes. They’d just have to stay at the shelters and hope like mad they got into one of the No-Kill ones.
Particularly as one couldn’t place more than one per home, or they might carry on doing the taxi war thing.
Hmm, good point. They’d all have to be listed as “one driver home required”
Too cool.. except Ginger saw this and I have a feeling our cars will never be the same again…. *Ginger in background going MUWAHAHAHAHAHA”
Oh dear, sorry Ginger, of all the dogs, got to see this one. Should have warned you before hand. Good luck with your cars 😀
Great idea to get the dogs rescued. The dogs drive a lot better than some people on the road!!!
Yes, exactly! We’ll put the bad drivers in shelters and the dogs behind the wheels 😀
This is amazing! Now I know what I want for Christmas… 😉
Um, a car maybe? 😀
Hahaha! I love this! ♥
Glad I could give you a laugh 🙂
